Job Description

As a Canadian dairy farm worker, you are a vital part of the dairy industry, contributing to the production and preservation of dairy products.

Animal Care:

You will perform the daily care of dairy cows, including feeding, watering and monitoring their health.

You will assist with birthing and take care of the newborn calves after birth.

Administer medications and vaccinations as directed by the farm veterinarian.

Milking Duties:

Operate milking equipment and machinery to efficiently milk cows.

Ensure proper hygiene standards are maintained during milking.

Monitor milk production and identify abnormalities or problems with milking equipment.

Stable Maintenance:

Clean and maintain stables, milking parlours and other farm facilities.

Bedding Management: Ensuring cows have clean, comfortable bedding.

Repairing and maintaining farm infrastructure such as fences, gates and feeding equipment.

Field Work:

Assisting with pasture management including rotational grazing and field maintenance.

Harvesting and storing forage for the winter, such as hay and silage.

Operate farm machinery for tasks such as mowing, raking and baling hay.

Record-Keeping:

Maintain accurate records of herd health, production and breeding activities.

Track inventory including feed and consumables. Follow

operational protocols for data entry and record-keeping systems.

Health and Safety:

Follow operational safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe work environment.

Use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and boots as required.

Immediately report any safety risks or incidents to management.

Teamwork and Communication:

Collaborate with other operational staff and management to achieve operational objectives.

Communicate effectively with coworkers to ensure tasks are completed efficiently.

Provide support and assistance during busy and high-load periods.

Requirements

  • Experience: Previous experience working on a dairy farm is an advantage but not required. Training can be completed on the job.
  • Physical Endurance: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting heavy objects and working in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Animal Handling Skills: Handle livestock safely and handle dairy cows safely and efficiently.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Basic knowledge of operating farm machinery and equipment is an advantage.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to follow instructions carefully and maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Communication Skills: Effective verbal communication skills to interact with coworkers and follow directions from management.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays depending on business hours and seasonal needs.
